Michael Phelps winning the men 100m butterfly 2008 Beijing OlympicsUS Swimming superstar Michael Phelps winning the men's 100m butterfly take his seven gold medals and matched Mark Spitz's 1972 Munich Games record.

"I'm speechless," said Phelps. "I really don't now what to say. I guess I've had the perfect situations all week. "I just have one race left, the relay, and then it's done. He added: "Tying Spitz's record is pretty cool. It's great to be a part of all of this."

The American was not in the top three at the turn but fought back and just managed to take the gold by a hundredth of a second in a time of 50.58 seconds.

Phelps, 23, goes in the final of the 4x100m medley on Sunday looking to win his eighth gold.

Serbia's Milorad Cavic won silver and Australia's Andrew Lauterstein bronze.

Phelps had previously won the 400m medley, 200m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 4x100m free relay, 4x200m free relay and the 200m medley, all in world record time.

And while his victory in the 100m fly wasn't a world record the US swimmer did set an Olympic record narrowly edging out Cavic in a thrilling race.

Phelps trailed Cavic with 10m to go and it looked as if his record bid was over, but the American turned on the style and snatched the victory by just one-hundredth of a second.
